You have a moving date in mind and a few companies to compare. Each promises a smooth move, but the details behind those promises can be very different.
Before booking movers in Dallas–Fort Worth, use these seven questions to understand who will handle your belongings, what your estimate covers, and how moving day will work. Keep the answers together so you can compare the same services across companies.
1. Who will actually perform my move?
Ask for the business name of the company handling pickup, transportation, and delivery. Confirm your main contact and who will communicate with you on moving day.
For an interstate move, ask whether the company is acting as a mover or a broker arranging transportation. The FMCSA explains the difference between movers and brokers. Knowing the arrangement helps you direct questions to the business responsible for the work.
2. How can I verify the company’s registration?
For a move within Texas, start with the TxDMV moving consumer information and registered-mover lookup. For a move between states, use the FMCSA registered-mover search.
Compare the company’s name and identifying information with the paperwork you receive. Ask the business to explain any differences. These are different lookup resources for different move types; a professional-looking website alone does not answer the registration question.
3. What information is your estimate based on?
A useful estimate needs more than a bedroom count. Explain your inventory, origin and destination, stairs, elevator access, parking, and extra stops. Mention heavy furniture, items in storage, and anything requiring disassembly.
Ask how to submit photos or an inventory and what happens if those details change. Our guide to what affects a DFW moving quote can help you prepare the information.
4. What is included, and what could change the total?
Request written details covering the work you expect. Ask about travel, loading and unloading, packing labor, materials, disassembly, reassembly, and additional stops. Have the mover explain any minimum charges or other terms that apply.
For example, compare an estimate for “moving packed boxes and furniture” with another that includes kitchen packing. They describe different jobs, even if both refer to the same house. Clarify the scope before comparing the price.
5. What arrival and scheduling arrangements are we confirming?
Ask whether you are booking a specific arrival time or a window, how updates will be provided, and what to do if building access or your move date changes. For long-distance moves, discuss pickup and delivery arrangements separately.
If you have a freight elevator reservation or a limited loading window, explain it before booking. Confirm rescheduling and cancellation terms rather than assuming every company handles changes the same way.
6. Who is responsible for packing and preparing each item?
Discuss what you will pack, what the crew will pack, and which furniture needs preparation. Ask about televisions, mirrors, glass furniture, appliances, and items you are unsure how to protect.
If you want professional packing help, confirm the scope, materials, timing, and cost. Also ask which items cannot be transported so they do not end up in sealed moving boxes.
7. What protection applies, and how are concerns handled?
Ask the mover to explain the protection options applicable to your move, any limitations, and how to document and report a concern. Request the relevant terms in writing. Avoid assuming that a general reference to insurance means every item will be replaced at its full value.
Keep your estimate, inventory, contact information, and moving paperwork accessible throughout the move.
