How to Prepare Your Home for Movers: The Day-Before Checklist

When movers arrive, the most useful preparation is a home where the crew can identify what is going, reach it safely, and understand any special instructions. That starts before the truck pulls up.

Use this day-before checklist for your DFW home move. If you spot a task you cannot finish, contact your moving company while there is still time to discuss it.

1. Confirm the plan and share changes

Review both addresses, the arrival arrangements, your contact number, and any extra stops. Send gate instructions and confirm where the truck can park. If a property manager controls access, keep that person’s contact details handy.

Tell your mover about anything added since your estimate: extra boxes, another piece of furniture, a storage stop, or packing help you now need. Ask how changes affect the work and price. Our moving quote guide explains the details worth sharing.

2. Finish boxes and label their destination rooms

Pack loose belongings into suitable containers and close boxes securely. Label each box with its destination room and a brief description. Put fragile-item instructions where the crew can see them.

Use smaller boxes for dense items such as books. Avoid packing a large box so heavily that it becomes difficult to handle. If you are unsure how to pack mirrors, artwork, or delicate items, ask your mover before attempting it.

If packing is unfinished, explain exactly what remains. Professional packing assistance needs to be discussed and confirmed; it is not automatically part of every moving booking.

3. Create a clearly marked “stays with me” area

Choose a bag or a small area for items that should not be loaded. Include medications, identification, important paperwork, keys, chargers, small valuables, and first-night essentials.

Tell the crew where that area is during the initial walkthrough. Keep keys and access devices available until loading, walkthroughs, and any required handovers are complete.

4. Clear the route through your home

Remove small obstacles from doorways, hallways, stairs, and the route to the truck. Keep boxes away from exits and avoid stacking belongings where they obstruct a turn.

Move cars or other obstructions only where you are authorized to do so. Confirm loading arrangements with your building or property manager. For apartments, use our apartment moving checklist to review elevators and loading access.

5. Discuss furniture preparation before taking things apart

Confirm which items the movers will disassemble and reassemble, if that work is included. Keep hardware in labeled bags and explain where it belongs. Photograph complicated arrangements where useful.

Empty furniture as directed by your mover, and secure loose shelves or parts according to the agreed plan. Do not assume appliance disconnection, wall-mounted television removal, or other specialized work is included. Arrange the appropriate help in advance.

6. Separate unwanted items from the moving inventory

Mark furniture and boxes that are staying, being donated, or being removed. Clear identification helps prevent an unwanted item from traveling to the new home.

If bulky items still need to leave, ask about junk removal services and confirm accepted items, scheduling, and pricing. Ask your mover about items they cannot transport and arrange suitable handling separately.

7. Plan for children, pets, and a reachable decision-maker

Arrange a safe area away from the loading route for children and pets. Keep leads, carriers, and essentials accessible.

Decide who will complete the walkthrough with the crew and answer questions about what is moving. Keep that person’s phone charged and available throughout the day.

8. Give the crew a useful first walkthrough

On arrival, point out fragile belongings, furniture requiring attention, the items staying behind, and anything that has changed. Share destination room labels and show the crew the access route.

Before leaving your current home, check cupboards, closets, outdoor areas, and storage spaces. Keep enough time for a final walkthrough rather than relying on memory.

The five-minute final check

  • Boxes closed and labeled
  • Walkways and exits clear
  • Keys, documents, and essentials kept with you
  • Parking and building access confirmed
  • Special instructions ready for the crew
