Moving Into a Dallas–Fort Worth Apartment? Use This Checklist

An apartment move can involve plenty of coordination before the first box leaves your home. Elevators, parking arrangements, and building access all deserve a place on your moving checklist.

Whether you’re moving to Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, or another DFW community, these steps can help you prepare.

Confirm the rules at both properties

Contact your current and future property managers before moving day. Ask about permitted moving hours, elevator reservations, loading areas, and any documents they require from your moving company.

Get the instructions in writing and share them with your movers. Requirements can differ between properties, even when they’re only a few miles apart. Confirm how far ahead reservations must be made.

Plan the route from the truck to your door

Find out where the moving truck can park and whether the route includes stairs, gates, narrow walkways, or long hallways. Tell your movers the floor number at both apartments and whether elevators are available.

Provide gate codes and entry instructions ahead of time. If a loading space needs to be reserved, arrange that with the property rather than assuming it will be available.

Measure your largest furniture

Check sofas, bed frames, desks, and dining tables against doorways, elevators, and tight turns. Consider the entire route into the apartment, including building entrances and hallway corners.

If something looks difficult, send your movers photos and measurements before the move so you can discuss the plan. A quick check now can help you identify a piece that needs disassembly or a different placement.

Pack by destination room

Label boxes with the room they belong in and a brief description of their contents. “Kitchen—everyday dishes” is more helpful than “miscellaneous.” Keep packed boxes clear of doors and walkways.

Keep a separate first-night bag with toiletries, chargers, clothes, bedding, and basic cleaning supplies. Carry keys, identification, medications, and important documents with you.

Coordinate keys and arrival times

Confirm when you can collect your new keys and when the apartment will be ready. Give yourself room for the move-out walkthrough and any required check-in steps at the new property.

On moving day, keep your phone available so your movers and property managers can reach you. Arrange a safe place for children and pets away from the loading route.
